SLC27 family of fatty acid transporters in GtoPdb v.2023.1

چکیده

Fatty acid transporter proteins (FATPs) are a family (SLC27) of six transporters (FATP1-6). They have at least one, and possibly [6, 13], transmembrane segments, predicted on the basis structural similarities to form dimers. SLC27 members several domains: integral membrane associated domain, peripheral FATP signature, intracellular AMP binding motif, dimerization lipocalin an ER localization domain (identified in FATP4 only) [4, 10, 11]. These unusual that they appear express intrinsic very long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase (EC 6.2.1.- , EC 6.2.1.7) enzyme activity. Within cell, these may associate with plasma peroxisomal membranes. FATP1-4 -6 transport long- fatty acids, while FATP5 transports acids as well bile [9, 13, 1].

Role of fatty acid transporters in epidermis

Skin epidermis is an active site of lipid synthesis. The intercellular lipids of human stratum corneum (SC) are unique in composition and quite different from the lipids found in most biological membranes. The three major lipids in the SC are free fatty acids, cholesterol and ceramides. Fatty acids can be synthesized by keratinocytes de novo and, in addition, need to be taken up from the circul...

Fatty acid transporters in animal cells.

The mechanism by which fatty acids transverse the plasma membrane has been a controversial subject. Kinetic studies of fatty acid uptake suggested the presence of a protein carrier system in certain cells which exhibit rapid fatty acid influx and/or efflux such as hepatocytes, adipocytes and jejunal mucosal cells. Five plasma membrane proteins have been identified and proposed as candidates for...

A family of fatty acid transporters conserved from mycobacterium to man.

Long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are an important source of energy for most organisms. They also function as blood hormones, regulating key metabolic functions such as hepatic glucose production. Although LCFAs can diffuse through the hydrophobic core of the plasma membrane into cells, this nonspecific transport cannot account for the high affinity and specific transport of LCFAs exhibited by cel...
